The List
Alright, so here are the schools that I am applying to for Creative Writing MFAs, in order of deadlines not preference:
Michener Center for Writers - Austin, TX
Cornell University - Ithaca, NY
University of Minnesota - Minneapolis, MN
University of North Carolina - Greensboro, NC
Syracuse University - Syracuse, NY
University of Colorado - Boulder, CO
University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, MI
University of Washington - Seattle, WA
Iowa Writers Workshop - Iowa City, IA
University of Montana - Missoula, MT
University of Arkansas - Fayetteville, AR
Washington University - St. Louis, MO
Vanderbilt University - Nashville, TN
Virginia Commonwealth University - Richmond, VA
University of Memphis - Memphis, TN
Louisiana State University - Baton Rouge, LA
Ole Miss - Oxford, MS
There are a couple that fell by the wayside to which I would have liked to apply, but ultimately I think this is PLENTY of schools. It was very hard for me to give up applying to Brown, but from the research I did, there's no way I would have been able to live in Providence without taking out more loans and I am not itching to do that. I also didn't get it together to apply to Johns Hopkins. I'm pretty happy with my list and am trying my damnedest not to get excited about any schools in particular. But if I had to choose, here are the ones that excite me the most:
Minnesota
Colorado
Arkansas
Ole Miss
U Washington
VCU
U Memphis
These aren't exactly programs I would expect to be excited about just based on locations or anything, but they all have extras that make them especially intriguing. Arkansas, Minnesota, and Washington all have educational outreach programs that look great. Arkansas has a semester program in Ireland. VCU, well, frankly I went to Richmond and loved it and would love to be involved with Blackbird. And I've been reading a lot about Boulder and get excited every time I think about it. Then Ole Miss has prison and community outreach as well. Memphis has a really interdisciplinary approach that is quite appealing. And though I can't say that I am chomping at the bit to live in Fayetteville, AR, I would LOVE to live in Richmond, Boulder, Seattle, Memphis, or Minneapolis.
I don't know. I think I might have a snowball's chance in hell.
