How to Stay Sane While Unemployed

1) Leave the house everyday. Even if it's just to get the mail or buy mangoes and brussels sprouts from the grocery store. Normal people leave the house. Keep that framework in place.

2) Move around. Go for a walk. I've found that if I work out early in the day, I'm able to get more done later because I already feel that I've accomplished something. I recommend Crunch Gym workouts--I have five. There's an instructor who looks kind of like Maya Rudolph and is in almost every video. She is so enthusiastic that it makes me giggle, and when I tune out, I can contemplate whether her breasts are real or not. There's also a token guy who I'm convinced they put in the video to make uncoordinated people feel good about themselves. He brings me endless amusement when my muscles are burning:

3) Write. This is good even if you're not a writer. But I'm finding it to be one of the most helpful things to keep my sanity. I've written 17 poems since I started this endeavor on June 2nd. Keeping my wheels greased.

4) Drink coffee. Everything is better with coffee.

5) Organize your space. How long have you been meaning to throw out those bath products you don't use? The clothes you don't wear? Or that stack of papers that's been sitting in a corner of your desk for months? Now is the time.

6) Catch up with people you haven't talked to in a while. You are not an island. Be glad that you have this extra time to communicate. Plus two points if you leave the house to do it.

7) Limit your time on the computer, whether looking for jobs or not. When your hands start to tingle from too many hours on the laptop, go see a movie, drive around with the windows down and listen to music, or stay in and read a book. You were productive today; now enjoy it.
